After boat sinks, 10 Cuban migrants swim to shore in Florida Keys
After their boat sank, a group of 10 Cuban migrants was able to swim to shore on Monday morning in the Florida Keys, authorities said.
The migrants swam to Duck Key, an island in the middle Florida Keys, according to sources familiar with their arrival and detention.
Miami sector’s U.S. Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar tweeted that Border Patrol agents “with support from” the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 5:30 a.m.
On Thursday, Slosar reported that 24 men and two women from Cuba arrived at Key Biscayne in a wooden boat and local law enforcement partners assisted with the detention at about 3 a.m.
Slosar has continued to share photographs of the overcrowded and unsafe boats that Cuban migrants have been using to flee their island amid an ongoing crisis.
Hurricane Ian destroyed the already crumbling infrastructure in the western part of the Island, and the Cuban government has been struggling to respond.
