Deputy shoots suspect; BSO closes Broward Boulevard

Deputies closed Broward Boulevard in both directions after a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a suspect on Thursday near Fort Lauderdale.

Witnesses said deputies followed the man out of the Walmart Supercenter at 2500 W Broward Blvd. The man ran to the parking lot, got inside a car, and drove away.

“Shortly before noon today, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives from various units were working a planned operation when they attempted to take a suspect into custody in Central Broward,” said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for BSO.

Witnesses said they saw deputies following the man until he stopped near a Checkers drive-in restaurant at Northwest 27th Avenue. The man jumped out of the car and ran. Deputies followed. Witnesses said they heard four gunshots.

“The suspect was shot and transported to an area hospital. No law enforcement personnel were injured,” Coleman-Wright said.

Deputies were asking drivers to avoid the area near the intersection of Broward Boulevard and Northwest 27th Avenue. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.

This is a developing story.
