Driver, child killed in fiery Plantation crash
Two people, including a child, have died following a fiery car crash Thursday morning in Plantation, authorities confirmed.
The crash was reported around 3:30 a.m. in the 400 block of North University Drive.
Plantation police said the driver of a black 2014 Mercedes-Benz lost control of the vehicle and crashed.
The driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that the passenger was a child, but did not immediately release the victim’s age.
A Local 10 News viewer took video of the scene shortly after the crash occurred.
Car parts could be seen spread across the roadway and someone was heard screaming in the background.
A woman who was visiting relatives nearby told Local 10 News that she heard the crash and then went to her family’s apartment balcony, which faces the scene. She said she saw another vehicle stopped on the opposite side of the roadway.
“I heard two booming sounds right after the crash and then a woman screaming for her baby,” Frances Elizabeth Velasco said. “She was like, ‘My baby! My baby!’ And I actually started crying when I heard that because I felt really helpless and I couldn’t do anything about it.
Velasco said she was about to call 911, but police pulled up almost immediately after.
“They came right away and all I saw was just flames and that woman screaming. I didn’t know what to do,” she said.
Officials with the Plantation Fire Department confirmed that University Drive was shut down in both directions between Fifth Street and Third Street after the crash.
Drivers are advised to avoid North University Drive from West Broward Boulevard to Cleary Boulevard for the time being.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said no other vehicles were involved in the collision.
