Man, 18, arrested for Miami-Dade murder while out on weapons charge

Detectives arrested an 18-year-old man who was out on a weapons charge on Wednesday morning after accusing him of using a “rifle-like firearm” to shoot and kill a victim in Miami-Dade County’s Gladeview neighborhood.

A ShotSpotter alert detected eight gunshots at about 8:35 p.m., on Tuesday, near the intersection of Northwest 17 Avenue and 76 Street, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s arrest affidavit.

Detectives identified the shooter as Diamante Jean-Philippe, of Cutler Bay.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel found the victim lying in a parking area and took her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where a doctor pronounced her dead shortly after 9:30 p.m., according to police.

Witnesses helped police officers find the firearm in an abandoned home in the neighborhood and said he was arguing with his victim before the shooting. Another witness told a police officer that Jean-Philippe broke into their home and said, “he could not go outside because the victim’s brothers were going to kill him,” according to the arrest report.

Police officers arrested Jean-Philippe after questioning him at about 6:55 a.m., at the Miami-Dade Police Department’s headquarters in Doral. Records show corrections officers have been holding Jean-Philippe without bond on a second-degree murder charge since about 8 a.m., at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Court records show he had been out on a $5,000 bond after a Jan. 28 arrest for carrying a concealed firearm, a third-degree felony. The case remained open and his bond review hearing had been set for 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Jean-Philippe’s criminal record in Miami-Dade also includes a May 2020 arrest for attempted murder that resulted in a December 2020 order for a psychological evaluation and a boot camp program. The case closed in August 2021, records show.

Police officers were asking anyone with information about the murder to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

This is a developing story.
