SWAT team responds to apartment building in Wilton Manors

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department responded to an apartment building on Tuesday afternoon in Wilton Manors.

According to Detective Ali Adamson, crisis negotiators were in communication with a gunman who was on the balcony of an apartment building in the area of North Andrews Avenue and Northeast 17 Court.

Adamson, a spokeswoman for the department, said officers detained the man for a mental health evaluation under the Baker Act, a state law that allows the involuntary examination.

“There is no further threat to the community at this time,” Adamson wrote in an e-mail at about 4:30 p.m.

Officers temporarily closed N. Andrews Avenue.
